The Subharchord, the GDR instrument that was to give us the sound of the future, is the main character in Ina Pillat's film about the post-war period, modernity and faith in the future.
We follow the instrument from its creation in East Berlin, to NRK and Ringve museum, where one of three surviving specimens is now found after being smuggled out in the late sixties. The story of the utopian instrument evokes both reflection and emotion, at a time when faith in the future has faded and the present is marked by disillusionment and uncertainty.
